In offshore wind turbines grouted connections are generally used to install a transition piece between the steel tower and the monopile foundation. Unfortunately plain-pipe grouted connections for large-diameter monopile foundations have recently exhibited clear signs of insufficient axial capacity, resulting in slippage between the transition piece and monopile. Eighteen grouted pile-to-sleeve connections were tested to examine the influence of combined loading, relative shear-key location between pile and sleeve, pile-sleeve eccentricity, and grout strength. The results indicated that combined loading had no detrimental effect on ultimate capacity of a grouted connection.
